There are no tricks only treats at dotNet Miami this month. SQL Server, it’s a black box for many of us developers. But yet, it holds the key to so many performance problems that our applications have. This month, Richie Rump will be in the house to give us an insight on how we can create indexes in SQL Server and speed up our applications. Richie will also show us how indexes are structured and how we can identify which tables need indexes. He’ll also answer the question “Why does Entity Framework kill indexes?”. We’ll also have Janier Davila to give us an overview of the new features in one of our favorite languages C#. C# 6 promises to have some great new language features and the new Roslyn complier. This will be a great night of application optimization and future C# goodness.

We’ll be meeting at Right Space 2 Meet. Right Space 2 Meet is a cowork facility that provides a collaborative community and a professional environment for entrepreneurs, freelancers and business professionals. It offers fully furnished offices, virtual offices, coworking spaces, conference facilities and event spaces. Right Space 2 Meet is located at 100 Miracle Mile Suite #200 in Coral Gables.

You can park at either the metered parking or one of the two the public parking garages located at: 51 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables, FL 33134 or 245 Andalusia Avenue, Coral Gables, FL. Either parking lot is about a dollar an hour and a short walk to the SunTrust building. DO NOT park in the SunTrust building parking as you will most likely be towed.

And Don’t Miss the After Party…

Because we don’t want the fun to stop when the meeting is over we’ll be at Miller’s Ale House on Miracle Mile (101 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables) for food and networking. All are welcome.

We Don’t Need Roads: A Developer’s Look Into SQL Server Indexes

Have you ever ran a SQL or LINQ query against SQL Server and it was so slow that you wondered if the database was from 1955? You could use a Delorean or you can create indexes in your database. This session will introduce you to SQL Server indexes. Indexes are a powerful tool to improve the performance of our queries. We’ll discuss how indexes are structured and why they speed up queries, how INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE queries are affected by indexes and how to identify if an index is necessary. Then, we’ll take a look at an Entity Framework application and see how EF reacts to our fresh new indexes. If you want to make bad query performance a thing of the past this session is for you.
