Talk: Social Networks: New Heaven for Spammers and Attackers

Online social networks have greatly improved the communication efficiency of individuals and businesses. However, these effective features have also been fully explored by attackers to easily spread malicious contents to a large scale of social users. Many social engineering tricks, such as click-jacking, affiliate campaigns, and phishing apps, are constantly presented everywhere. One of the fastest growing threats on social networks is the fake social botnet. Fake social botnets contain fake users or pages, fake apps, and fake interactions. These fake profiles and apps give attackers a long-lived path to continuously present malicious links and malware to innocent users. In this talk, we present several large cases of fake social botnets and their monetization strategies, which happened on Twitter and Facebook recently. We will discuss a blooming underground market on Twitter that trades fake followers. Finally, we introduce several tools and services developed in Barracuda labs that help combat the increasing social threats.
